when we discovered that we had a tent
with no poles and poles with no tent.
Sharing tents would be necessary.  Some
who had planned on sleeping outside
would be forced to sleep inside.  Each
person’s vision of how the weekend would
go
yielded
reluctantly to reality
and
compromise.
Over the next days we suffered through
lost hats, “lost” cigarettes, and at one
point a lost canoeist.  Not to mention the
fish were not biting!
My favorite moment, however, came
Sunday morning when our NECI trained
breakfast chef, who also happens to be a
resident, cried out in despair, “the
hollandaise sauce is “broken”!  Another
resident, who happens to be a former
restaurant owner and a fabulous cook,

came to the rescue.  Armed with a
blender and more eggs, she whipped up a
“quickie” hollandaise that saved the day.  
Any lingering rough edges from the Friday
night “poles-no-tent, tent-no-poles” crisis
softened as these two accomplished
cooks served up Eggs Benedict to a very
hungry and appreciative crowd.……for
the moment anyway, one big, happy
family!!
